An AI companion for children should not be designed like a general-purpose chatbot placed inside a toy.

Children interact differently with characters, stories and conversational systems. A toy may feel more personal than a phone app because it has a face, a name, a physical presence and a consistent voice. That makes product design, transparency and parental controls especially important.

The goal should be to create a useful and enjoyable product without encouraging confusion about what the AI is, collecting unnecessary child data or designing the product to replace human relationships.

Child-Centred AI Starts with the Product Purpose

Before selecting features, define what the product is for.

Possible product goals include:

  • storytelling,
  • language practice,
  • educational questions,
  • creative play,
  • character role-play,
  • bedtime routines,
  • simple reminders,
  • or parent-approved learning content.

The more clearly the purpose is defined, the easier it is to decide which AI capabilities are appropriate.

Safety Is More Than Content Filtering

Child safety includes several layers:

  • what the AI is allowed to discuss,
  • what personal information it should avoid requesting,
  • how it handles sensitive conversations,
  • whether it clearly identifies itself as AI,
  • how conversation history is retained,
  • which memories may be stored,
  • and what parents can view or delete.

Tuya's Child Safety Mode is one example of a platform-level framework designed specifically for child-facing AI products. UNICEF's guidance on AI and children also emphasizes safety, privacy, transparency, accountability, inclusion and the best interests of the child.

A Toy Character Should Still Be Transparent About AI Identity

A child may interact with a named bear, robot or animal character.

That character can have:

  • personality,
  • a story,
  • a consistent voice,
  • favorite topics,
  • and a recognizable speaking style.

But role-play should not require the system to pretend that it is a real human being.

A strong product architecture separates character identity from AI identity.

The toy can be imaginative while still making clear that the conversational system is AI.

Do Not Design for Emotional Dependency

A child-focused AI product should not be marketed around claims that the toy will become the child's “best friend,” replace parents or replace real-world relationships.

UNICEF's 2026 work on AI chatbots and companions highlights the need for stronger safeguards, accountability and oversight around child-facing AI companion systems.

A safer product position is:

play, learning, creativity and structured companionship — alongside, not instead of, real human relationships.

Data Collection Should Be Minimized

Natural conversation can easily reveal personal information.

A child may mention:

  • a real name,
  • school,
  • home address,
  • family information,
  • daily routines,
  • phone numbers,
  • or other sensitive details.

The product should therefore be designed around data minimization rather than assuming every conversation should be retained.

Questions for the product team include:

  1. What data is genuinely required?
  1. Is raw audio stored?
  1. Is chat history stored?
  1. How long is it retained?
  1. Is long-term memory enabled?
  1. Can parents delete stored information?
  1. What happens when the device is unbound or resold?

Parent Controls Should Be Part of the Product

A child AI toy needs a parent layer, not just a pairing screen.

Depending on the product, parents may need control over:

  • device binding,
  • language,
  • voice selection,
  • usage time,
  • approved AI character,
  • conversation-history settings,
  • data deletion,
  • account management,
  • and safety-related settings.

Not every product needs every control, but the product team should make deliberate decisions rather than leaving them undefined.

Age-Appropriate Conversation Needs Testing

The same AI Agent should not automatically be used for every age group.

Evaluation should consider:

  • vocabulary level,
  • answer length,
  • sensitive topics,
  • reading or learning level,
  • whether the AI asks too many personal questions,
  • and whether responses are understandable without adult interpretation.

Scenario-based testing is more useful than asking the prototype a few random questions.

AI Memory Needs Tighter Rules for Children

Long-term memory may improve personalization, but children's products require a more constrained approach.

Useful personalization might include non-sensitive preferences such as:

  • preferred language,
  • selected character,
  • or a parent-approved learning theme.

The product should not assume that storing more personal information always creates a better experience.

Physical Safety Still Matters

A child-focused AI companion is still a physical toy.

The product also needs to consider:

  • small parts,
  • batteries,
  • charging,
  • fabric and materials,
  • electronics access,
  • mechanical motion,
  • and the intended age group.

Digital safety does not replace physical toy safety.

Design the Product as One System

A strong child-focused AI toy integrates:

character + hardware + voice + AI Agent + safety rules + parent controls + privacy + physical toy engineering.
