A child-facing AI toy cannot simply be treated as a normal chatbot inside a plush shell.

Children interact differently from adults. They may share personal information without realizing it, rely heavily on the personality of a character, misunderstand whether the AI is a real person, or continue talking for long periods without recognizing that the system is software.

For that reason, child-focused AI products require a different product architecture.

Tuya's 2026 developer documentation introduces a dedicated Child Safety Mode for AI products and AI Agents intended for children. The mode is designed to change how the platform handles safety prompts, personal information, parental controls, conversation retention and selected regional capabilities.

For AI toy brands and OEM/ODM developers, the important point is not only that a safety mode exists. The important point is that child safety changes the structure of the product itself.

Child Safety Is More Than Content Filtering

A common misunderstanding is that child-safe AI means adding a list of prohibited words or blocking a few sensitive topics.

Tuya's documentation describes a broader approach.

When a product is configured as a dedicated child AI solution, its associated AI Agent can be required to operate under Child Safety Mode. This affects the system-level behavior of the agent rather than only individual replies.

The safety layer can include:
